Gold perpetual CFDs offer exposure to gold price movements with 24/7 market access and no an expiry date, allowing you to go long or short. This guide explains how gold perp CFDs work, how funding rates are applied, how they compare with other ways to trade gold and their potential benefits and risks.
Gold perpetual CFDs (or just ‘perp CFDs’) let you trade gold price movements 24/7, even during weekends and holidays. If you're already familiar with gold CFDs, perp CFDs offer a similar way to gain exposure to the gold market, but with a perpetual contract structure. While perpetual contracts originated in cryptocurrency markets, the model has since expanded to other asset classes including commodities, stocks and indices.
This guide explains what gold perp CFDs are, how they work and how they compare with spot gold CFDs and gold futures CFDs. We'll cover the funding rate mechanism that replaces traditional overnight swap charges, discuss the key risks and explain how to get started if you decide they are right for you.
What are perp CFDs and what are gold perp CFDs?
A perpetual CFD is a derivative contract between a trader and a broker that tracks the price of an underlying asset but has no expiry date. Instead, you can keep a position open for as long as your account has sufficient margin. Rather than incurring traditional overnight swap charges, perpetual CFDs use a funding rate set weekly and applied once per day.
A gold perp CFD tracks the spot gold price (the current market price), giving you exposure to gold's price movements without owning the actual metal. Like other gold CFDs, you can take a long or short position, allowing you to speculate on both rising and falling prices.
At Pepperstone, gold and any other perp CFDs are traded through an existing CFD account, using the same platforms and subject to the same regulatory protections as the rest of our CFD products.
How do perp CFDs differ from standard CFDs and gold forward CFDs?
Three products, three different ways of taking a view on gold.
Standard (spot) gold CFDs track the cash gold market. They have no fixed expiry but do carry a daily overnight swap. They trade during standard gold trading hours, which are almost 24-hours Monday to Friday, closed at the weekend.
Gold forward (futures) CFDs are priced from the front-month gold futures contract. Unlike spot gold CFDs, overnight funding costs are incorporated into the pricing, so there are no separate daily swap charges. The contract automatically rolls to the next futures month, unless you close it.
Gold perp CFDs are designed for around-the-clock trading, providing 24/7 access to gold markets, including weekends and holidays when standard gold markets are closed. They track the underlying gold price and use a funding rate set weekly in advance and applied daily, helping traders understand holding costs ahead of time. Unlike traditional futures contracts, they have no expiry date.

Funding rates: The cost of holding gold perp CFD positions
Funding is the mechanism used to help keep a perpetual market aligned with its underlying reference price. Unlike traditional CFD swap charges, funding is based on the balance between buyers and sellers in the market. When market positioning becomes heavily skewed towards long or short positions, funding helps encourage balance while supporting price alignment with the underlying market.
At Pepperstone, funding is designed to be more predictable than on many crypto-native perpetual trading venues. Rather than passing through funding payments throughout the day, it is converted into a single weekly rate that is published in advance for the week ahead. That weekly rate is then applied as daily swap entries, with one-seventh of the weekly amount charged or credited each day at 5pm New York time, making it easier to estimate holding costs.
There is no broker mark-up added to the published funding rate. However, as with other CFDs, gold perp CFDs are also subject to other costs such as spreads and applicable commission.
Example*
Say you open a long position in a gold perp CFD equivalent to 10 troy ounces, with gold trading at around $4,000 per ounce.
Your total notional exposure would be: 10 × $4,000 = $40,000
Assume the published funding rate for the week is 0.14% and you're on the paying side. That equates to a daily funding adjustment of: 0.14% ÷ 7 = 0.02% per day.
Therefore, your daily funding charge would be: $40,000 × 0.02% = $8.00 per day.
For a full week, the total funding cost would be: $8.00 × 7 = $56.00.
If you're on the receiving side of funding, the adjustment would instead be credited to your account. Funding rates may change over time as market conditions evolve.

Advantages of gold perp CFDs
- 24/7 access, including weekends: Gold perp CFDs can be traded around the clock, outside regular market hours, allowing you to hedge over the weekend and react to market-moving events whenever they occur. You don’t have to wait for the Monday open to see where the XAU/USD weekend price ends up, but prices can move significantly during that time.
- No expiry or rollover to manage: Gold perp CFDs have no fixed expiry date, so there are no contract rollovers to manage or expiry dates to monitor. You can hold a position for as long as your account has sufficient funds.
- Predictable funding cost: As rates are published before the week begins and applied once daily, it is easier to estimate the overall holding costs than on crypto-native perpetual trading venues where funding can change throughout the day.
- No crypto wallet or separate account needed: Gold perp CFDs are traded through your existing CFD account, using the platforms, funding methods and withdrawal process you’re already familiar with.
- Leveraged long and short exposure: Like other CFDs, gold perp CFDs allow you to take both long and short positions using leverage, so you can speculate on rising and falling gold prices. Leverage magnifies both profits and losses, so ensure you understand the risks before trading.
Do gold perp CFDs suit you?
Gold perp CFDs tend to appeal to traders who:
- Trade around weekend or out-of-hours news and want continuous access to the market rather than waiting for Monday's open.
- Want to hold a gold position over an extended period without managing contract expiries or rollovers.
- Already trade gold CFDs and want an alternative to traditional overnight swap charges.
- Are comfortable with a variable, published-in-advance funding rate as the cost of holding a position.
They are less likely to suit traders who need a fixed-date exposure to align with a specific event or hedge, for example, or who would rather avoid a holding cost that can change from week to week.
Risks of trading gold perp CFDs
Gold perp CFDs are complex, leveraged derivative products and like all CFDs, carry a high risk of losing money quickly. Their pricing behaviour, trading conditions and market liquidity differ from those of standard gold CFDs,
Specific risks to consider include:
- Funding rates: These are published in advance but can change from week to week. If you hold a position for an extended period, these costs can accumulate and affect your earning potential.
- Leverage: While it allows you to gain greater market exposure with a smaller upfront deposit, it can also magnify losses as well as gains. If the market moves against you, losses can exceed your initial margin requirement.
- Market risk: Gold prices can react sharply to economic data releases, geopolitical events, central-bank decisions and changes in market sentiment. Significant price movements can occur in a short period of time.
- Lower liquidity: Trading conditions may vary throughout the day. During quieter trading periods, weekends or market holidays, liquidity may be lower and spreads may widen, potentially increasing trading costs and affecting execution. Stop-loss orders and other risk-management tools may not always be executed at your requested price.
To work out whether gold perp CFDs are appropriate for you, we encourage you to seek independent financial advice. Make sure you understand how the funding rate, margin and leverage work, and start practising on a demo account before risking real funds.

Gold perp CFDs use a funding rate mechanism rather than traditional overnight swap charges. At Pepperstone, the funding rate is published in advance for the week ahead and applied daily as a swap adjustment. This helps traders estimate potential holding costs before entering or maintaining a position. Funding is separate from spreads and commissions, which continue to apply when trading.
Yes. One of the key features of gold perp CFDs is their extended trading availability, including weekends. Unlike standard gold CFDs, which generally follow weekday market trading hours, gold perp CFDs allow traders to react to market-moving events and manage positions outside traditional market hours.
A gold futures CFD is based on a specific gold futures contract and derives its pricing from the futures market. Gold perpetual CFDs, by contrast, have no expiry date and do not require rollover management. Instead of using a futures contract structure, gold perp CFDs use a funding-rate mechanism to support pricing and position holding.
A gold perp CFD provides exposure to gold price movements with 24/7 market access, allowing you to trade throughout the week, including weekends and holidays when standard gold markets are closed. Gold perp CFDs use a funding rate mechanism instead of traditional swap charges.
A spot gold CFD tracks the spot gold market and is generally available only during standard market hours. Positions held overnight are typically subject to swap charges.
No. Gold perp CFDs are traded through a standard CFD account. You can fund your account, place trades and withdraw funds using the same processes and platforms used for other CFD products.
Gold perp CFDs can be suitable for traders who wish to maintain exposure to gold without managing contract expiries or rollovers. However, daily funding charges apply, and liquidity and spreads can vary outside traditional market hours, during weekends or quieter trading periods, which may affect execution and costs. As with any leveraged product, it's important to consider whether gold perp CFDs align with your objectives, trading style and risk tolerance.
